redhottutorial3.jpg (20567 bytes)

1.  Tie in clear, hollow midge lace and wrap to middle of bend

2.   IMPORTANT:   Keep tension on midge lace while you wrap down shank. This will prevent you from creating a bulky body and aid in the tapering of the body later on.

3. (for rotarty vise users)  wrap thread back to the eye and secure thread with whip finish

redhottutorial4.jpg (18734 bytes)

1.   Wrap 3 strands of red krystal flash up shank in consecutive, touching turns

2.   Secure KF behind bead with whip finish

redhottutorial5.jpg (16389 bytes)

1.  Wrap the midge lace up the shank of the hook in touching turns.

2.   IMPORTANT:  keep tight tension on the lace as you wrap up the shank.   Then, lighten your tension when you begin to reach the bead.   This will create a semi-tapered bodied bug.

3.  Secure lace well behind bead with whip finish.

4.  Coat whip finish with 2 coats of thin head cement.

You're done.  This fly is an excellent attractor pattern for the San Juan River in New Mexico.  The sparkle red krystal flash underneath the larva lace really makes the fly look natural.
