2008 San Juan River Spring/Run-off Flows

The flows have changed so much this spring. It has been hard to know how high the river will be on any given day, but we finally have a fairly predictable schedule for the flow rate on the San Juan through run-off.

Notes to remember:

The river will be wadeable up to 3,000cfs, and up to 4,000cfs with a guide. I wouldn't suggest wading past 4,000cfs, but floating the river should still be great even at 5,000cfs, especially if we have some-what clear water. I'll still be doing float trips at 5,000cfs, and last year, some of my best days were at high water fishing the pockets behind the islands or behind submerged rocks, and the fish fight harder than you've ever experienced on the Juan.

The fly selection:

#6-8 Bunny leeches in various colors

#12-18 San Juan and chamois worms

#14-18 Red and orange larva, OJ's, princess, sparkle worms, red hots, desert storms

#6-8 Wooly buggers in olive, black, brown

#18-20 NV Midges, zebra midges, foam-wing Rs2's, trojan midges etc...

Please be VERY careful if you want to fish during high flows! Wading at flows over  2,500cfs can be dangerous without a qualified guide who knows the river well. However,  float fishing will be great anytime during the spring run-off flows. I'll be doing wade trips during spring run-off up to 4,000cfs with clients who are strong waders, and definitely float trips with any clients who want to fish for BIG fish during the high flows! If I can help you plan your trip during high flows, please don't hesitate to contact me judeduran@gmail.com , or on my cell phone at 505-280-3533
