Driving up the curved road that parallels the river, you begin to realize just how
different the San Juan is. The high desert plateaus and the blazing red/orange hues of the
sun as it rises over the canyon wall tell you you're in a special place. This river has a
unique beauty that is not as noticeable as the other famous Western Tail waters. You have
to look closely to see the Great Blue Heron stalking its next meal in the riffle near you.
You have to take a moment to listen to the rustle of the mule deer wandering through the
willow and alder hoping to cross the river without being noticed. You'll have to stop
watching your strike indicator long enough to notice the dozens of trout around you
feeding heavily on midge pupa stuck in the surface film of the river's currents. The San
Juan is a special place indeed, and one that is not to be missed. |

Fishing the San Juan River is a unique experience not easily matched. When I talk to
people all over the country who have yet to visit the river, I tell them, "You have
to come fish the San Juan at least once in your life!" I guide people on the San Juan
River for one reason, I want to share the greatest sport in the world with as many people
as I can. I approach my days of guiding with the goal of making every minute of your day
the best possible. I am a very patient instructor and never patronizing. I realize
you may need instruction, but I also realize this is YOUR vacation, and you want it to be
as memorable as possible, filled with the enjoyment of catching fish, but also the
experience of fishing with a guide who intimately knows the environment, beauty, and
wildlife of the area. |

I have
been fishing since I was 3 years old, but I began my professional fly fishing career as a
Commercial Fly Tyer. I have developed several patterns for the San Juan River, and have
sold them to hundreds of people around the country who have used them with much success on
their home rivers. I have do fly tying instruction, casting instruction, and fly fishing
seminars throughout the Western US, and I'm proud to be one of only 2 Whiting Farms Pro
Staff Members in NM. In 2003, one of the patterns I invented was chosen as one of the
"Best New Flies" by Fly Fisherman Magazine. This catapulted my fly
fishing career and helped lead me further into the fly fishing community. In 2007, I was
published in "Fly Fisherman Magazine", and since then my life has been in a
whirlwind of activity. I'm lucky to be able to do something I love for a living!! |
|
Now, I am a Commercial Fly Tyer and a Professional Fly Fishing Guide. I still do several
presentations and fly tying demonstrations throughout the country, casting instruction,
and try to fish for myself whenever I have time. I would be more than happy to guide
you and your family or friends on the San Juan River. If I can help plan your trips,
please don't hesitate to contact me by e-mail at judeduran@gmail.com, or on my cell phone at
